About
Climping Beach, also known as Atherington Beach, is near Littlehampton in West Sussex. It offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to enjoy a day by the sea with their dogs. This quiet beach is less commercialised than many other South Coast beaches.
Dog Access and Rules
Climping Beach is particularly popular among dog owners because it allows dogs year-round without restrictions. This makes it a great choice for those who want to enjoy the beach with their canine companions at any time of the year.
Things To See & Do
The beach is known for its natural, unspoiled setting with minimal development. This stretch of coast is a dog-walker’s paradise, as many of the beaches merge into one separated by wooden groynes. They stretch from the Arun River estuary at Littlehampton in the east to Bognor Regis to the west, all allowing dogs.
There are big problems with erosion on this stretch of coast, and we have been travelling down for years. The stretch between Climping and Elmer now seems to be left to the mercy of the conditions and has changed so much. You need to be a little careful, as the high-water coast path has taken a battering and can be risky underfoot or just missing in places. So we recommend walking at mid- to low tide when you can stick to the beach.
Access and Facilities
Climping Beach is accessible by car, and a paid car park is beside the beach. During the off-season, there is also a small amount of free parking along the approach road, which can fill up quickly.
Climping Beach’s facilities are limited, which helps maintain its natural charm. There are some basic toilets near the car park and a cafe that operates seasonally and offers refreshments and light meals.
Another option is to take the short walk back up the road to dog-friendly The Black Horse pub.
