About
There’s something different about Petworth Park. It’s got that grand, old-world feel, like you’ve stepped into a painting. Massive open spaces, ancient trees, and a lake that looks like it’s been there since the dawn of time. If your dog loves a proper leg stretch, this place is bang on—loads of space to run and new smells.
It’s part of the South Downs National Park, just outside Petworth, and is looked after by the National Trust. You get rolling parkland, some cracking views, and a real sense of history. Plus, wild deer are wandering about like they own the place.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome in Petworth Park, but there are some rules. The biggest one: leads. This is a Deer Park, and they’re not shy. If your dog’s got any chasing instinct, keep them on a lead. Even if they don’t, the National Trust asks for leads in most areas to protect the wildlife.
You can let dogs off in certain parts, but you’ve got to be in control. If your dog doesn’t listen when excited, this might not be the best place for an off-lead adventure.
Only assistance dogs are allowed in Petworth House, Servants’ Quarters and the cafe.
Things To See & Do
The park is massive, with 700 acres of open space and ancient oak trees that have seen more history than most buildings. Some are over 900 years old.
There are plenty of walking routes, from short loops to longer hikes. The walk up to the Upper Pond is nice; if you fancy something longer, you can go to the deer park for a complete circuit, about 5km.
If you like a bit of history, Petworth House is right next to the park. It’s a proper stately home. Dogs aren’t allowed inside, but if you’ve got someone with you, you could take turns having a look while the other one sits outside with the dog. The grounds around the house are lovely for a wander.
There’s no cafe in the park itself, and the one by the house doesn’t allow dogs, but Petworth town is just down the road, and it’s got some decent dog-friendly eateries. The Hungry Guest Cafe serves good coffee where dogs are welcome. If you fancy a proper meal, The Angel Inn is a good shout—dogs are allowed in the bar area and usually have water bowls out. You can even stay overnight!
For something a bit different, Petworth has loads of antique shops. Not exactly a dog’s idea of fun, but if you’re into that kind of thing, it’s worth a wander. Some shops allow dogs inside, but checking before strolling in with a muddy dog.
Access and Facilities
Driving is the easiest way to get to Petworth Park. A National Trust car park is right by the entrance, and it’s free for members. Non-members have to pay. If it’s busy, you might need to park in town and walk up; it’s not far, just a few minutes from the main square.
Public transport’s an option, but not the easiest. The nearest train station is Pulborough, about five miles away. From there, you’d need a taxi or a bus. You do have busses between Midhurst and Worthing that stop in Petworth.
Facilities-wise, there are toilets near the main entrance but not much else once you’re in the park. No bins scattered around, so you’ll have to carry dog waste bags until you find one. There are no water taps, so bring a bottle for your dog, especially on warm days.
