Things To See & Do
Old Sarum is an ancient hilltop settlement with a rich history spanning thousands of years. Originally an Iron Age hillfort, the Romans, Normans, and Saxons later occupied the site, eventually becoming a thriving medieval settlement. In 1070, William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a castle and cathedral, remnants of which still stand today. Over time, the settlement moved to what we now know as Salisbury.
Exploring Old Sarum with your dog is a treat, thanks to the 29 acres of open space and intriguing history around every corner. The paths around the castle ruins and the old cathedral foundations offer plenty of spots for curious dogs to explore.
From the top of the hillfort, you’ll enjoy sweeping views over the Wiltshire countryside, with Salisbury Cathedral visible in the distance. With wide, grassy spaces, Old Sarum is perfect for a picnic. You can settle down in a scenic spot, relax, and enjoy a snack or packed lunch while your dog takes in the sights and sounds of this unique site.

Old Sarum is easy to reach, located just a few miles from the centre of Salisbury. If you’re travelling by car, there is a car park on-site.
