There are some places that leave a lasting impression long after you’ve driven home. Birling Gap is one of them.
Nestled beneath the towering chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters, this National Trust beauty spot is one of the most spectacular places to visit with your dog in East Sussex. With dramatic coastal walks, breathtaking viewpoints, a dog-friendly cafe and a beach that’s perfect for stretching four legs, it’s a destination that deserves a full day rather than just a quick stop.
On our visit, we spent over seven hours exploring the coastline, walking to both Beachy Head and Cuckmere Haven, enjoying lunch with sea views and, of course, finishing with an ice cream before heading home.

Arriving at Birling Gap
After an early start and a two-hour drive, we arrived just after 9 am.
One of the joys of arriving early is experiencing Birling Gap before it becomes busy. The morning air was fresh, the sea was calm, and the famous white cliffs looked magnificent in the early sunshine.
After giving our dog a quick stretch around the car park, we set off on the first adventure of the day.
Morning Walk: Birling Gap to Beachy Head
Our first walk headed east along the South Downs Way towards the iconic Beachy Head.
This section of coastline is simply stunning.
The path follows the cliff tops, rising and falling gently, with each peak revealing another spectacular viewpoint. Looking back towards Birling Gap, the cliffs seem to glow against the blue sea.
Although the route is straightforward, care is needed near the cliff edges, especially if walking with an excitable dog. Keeping dogs on a lead is the safest option.
After around an hour of walking, the famous Beachy Head lighthouse came into view below the cliffs. It’s one of those places where you naturally stop, take a deep breath and simply admire the view.
After a short rest and plenty of photographs, we retraced our steps back to Birling Gap.

Exploring Birling Gap Beach
Back at Birling Gap, it was finally time to head down onto the all-year-round dog-friendly Birling Gap beach.
Access is via the staircase descending out from the cliffs, where you’re greeted by an incredible landscape of chalk, pebbles and fascinating rock pools.
At low tide, the beach opens up beautifully, giving dogs plenty of space to explore while waves gently roll onto the shore. The beach consists of large pebbles and rocks, so it is not the most comfortable walk.
The towering white cliffs behind create one of the most impressive coastal backdrops anywhere in southern England.
It’s easy to lose track of time here.
Lunch at the National Trust Cafe
After the morning walk, lunch couldn’t come soon enough.
Thankfully, the National Trust cafe welcomes dogs, making it an ideal place to recharge before the afternoon adventure.
Although dogs are allowed inside, we chose the outdoor seating overlooking the coastline; it’s hard to imagine a better lunch spot.
We enjoyed a relaxed break while our dog happily settled beside the table, watching other walkers come and go.
If you’re visiting during school holidays or sunny weekends, arriving before midday will usually mean shorter queues.
Afternoon Adventure: The Seven Sisters to Cuckmere Haven
Refuelled and ready to go again, we headed west this time, following the famous Seven Sisters towards Cuckmere Haven.
Many people consider this one of England’s finest coastal walks—and it’s difficult to disagree.
The route climbs and descends over the rolling chalk hills, with every crest revealing another unforgettable view of the coastline. The dips and climbs seemed steeper than the morning walk.
Eventually, the meandering Cuckmere River comes into view before reaching the wide open beach at Cuckmere Haven.
After another well-earned rest, we turned around and followed the same spectacular route back to Birling Gap.
Walking time: Around 1 hour each way.
One Last Ice Cream
After covering both sections of coastline, there was just enough time for one final treat.
An ice cream overlooking the sea seemed like the perfect way to end the day.
With our dog happily relaxing after a day packed with adventure, we spent a little longer soaking up the scenery before reluctantly making our way back to the car.
At 4:30 pm, it was time to begin the journey home.

Summer brings longer days and fantastic beach conditions, but with more coach trips, expect the car park and cafe to be much busier.
