About
Rising above the south Cornwall coast, Dodman Point is the tallest headland on the south Cornish coast, offering sweeping sea views and great dog-walking terrain. The headland lies a short distance from St Austell, between the coastal villages of Gorran Haven and Portloe.
The most distinctive feature is the huge granite cross rising prominently on the headland. Known as The Dodman Cross, it has watched over the shore for centuries, standing out as a landmark to seafarers far offshore.
For dog walkers, Dodman Point offers openness, invigorating sea air, and sweeping coastal panoramas. The scenery blends grassy clifftops, rugged coastal paths, and quiet farmland, making it an appealing location for an extended walk with your dog.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome around Dodman Point year-round, making it a good destination for coastal dog walks in any season.
Much of the walking takes place along open headland and sections of the South West Coast Path, where many visitors allow well-behaved dogs some off-lead time when the area is quiet.
Keep dogs under close control at all times, especially near livestock, wildlife and cliff edges, as drops can be steep and hazardous.
Things To See & Do
The brief ascent to The Dodman Cross is the pinnacle of any visit. The granite cross stands at the headland’s summit and commands one of Cornwall’s most impressive viewpoints.
From here you can look across St Austell Bay, with views stretching along the south coast on clear days.
Dogs usually enjoy the open grassy space around the summit, where they can pause while you take in the view.
Dodman Point sits directly on the South West Coast Path, making it a fantastic starting point for longer coastal walks.
Several remote and natural beaches sit nearby, allowing you to combine a clifftop walk with a stop by the sea. Beaches such as Vault Beach and Hemmick Beach are both within easy reach.
After a longer walk, these coves can be perfect spots for dogs to paddle and cool off.
One joy of Dodman Point is the sheer sense of space. The terrain feels vast and airy, framed by wide horizons, bracing sea breezes, and occasional seabirds gliding along the cliffs.
For many visitors, it’s the sort of place where you slow down, let your dog roam beside you, and enjoy the calm rhythm of the coast.
Access and Facilities
Keep in mind that Dodman Point is a natural headland rather than a managed attraction, so facilities are limited.
You have a couple of parking options depending on your walk:
- The main one is at the Penare National Trust car park. Ideal for Dodman Point and westerly to Hemmick Beach.
- Parking at Lamledra, a donation car park. Ideal for Vault Beach and coastal walks between Gorran Haven and the Dodman.
Things to keep in mind when planning a visit:
- Limited facilities on the headland.
- Bring water for your dog, especially in warm weather.
- Paths can be uneven in places.
- Clifftop sections require care in windy conditions.
Nearby villages such as Gorran Haven offer cafes and places to stop for food after your walk.
