About
Fistral Beach is Newquay’s best-known beach and one of Cornwall’s classic surfing destinations. Set on the town’s western side, it’s a wide sandy bay backed by low cliffs. Despite its popularity, the beach is large enough that you and your dog can usually find space, especially outside the busiest summer periods.
At low tide, the sand stretches out into a broad, firm expanse that’s perfect for long walks and energetic runs. The Atlantic swell brings steady surf, giving the beach a lively feel, while quieter corners can usually be found by walking further from the main access points.
It’s an easy place to spend a few hours with a dog, a long shoreline walk, time watching the surfers, and maybe a relaxed break at one of the beachside cafes.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on Fistral Beach year-round with no restrictions. Off-lead time is allowed, especially at low tide when the beach is wide. Always keep dogs under control near surfers, swimmers, and access points.
Waste bins are provided around the entrances, and cleaning up after your dog helps keep the beach welcoming for everyone.
Things To See & Do
Fistral is for energetic dogs and longer beach walks. The wide sands provide plenty of room for running, ball games and exploring, especially at low tide when the beach feels at its biggest.
- Big sandy runs: At low tide, Fistral’s wide, flat sand is perfect for long off‑lead runs for well‑behaved dogs – you can easily walk from South Fistral up towards Little Fistral at the north end.
- Little Fistral exploration: A smaller, sandy beach tucked under the Towan headland, accessible at low tide, though with stronger currents and no lifeguards.
- Rockpool exploring: Both the north and south ends of the beach have rock pools as the tide drops, which are great for sniffing and paddling.
- Cliff‑top walks: Combine beach time with a loop along the coast path on Pentire Head or Towan Headland for some great views (dogs on leads near cliffs).
Access and Facilities
Fistral is one of the best-equipped beaches in Newquay, with easy access and plenty of facilities.
There are several pay-and-display car parks close to the beach complex, plus toilets, showers and seasonal lifeguards. Surf schools and hire shops operate throughout much of the year.
A range of cafes and restaurants sit directly behind the beach, many of which are dog-friendly, as long as your dog is kept on a lead. This makes Fistral an easy place to combine a beach walk with refreshments.
Access to the sand is straightforward via sloping paths and steps, making it easier than many of Newquay’s smaller coves. Checking tide times is still worthwhile, as low tide gives the most walking space.
