About
Porthminster Beach is within St. Ives and is the first beach you will see as you leave the railway station. This large sandy beach is popular with families, as it is protected from the harsh waves by its location within St Ives Bay, with views over to Hayle Beach.
Dog Access and Rules
Porthminster Beach has seasonal dog restrictions, prohibiting dogs from 15th May to 30th September between 10 am and 6 pm.
Outside restriction periods, dogs can enjoy the sand off-lead, so long as recall is solid and you keep things considerate.
Things To See & Do
Porthminster Beach is soft sand with some firmer patches near the tideline. The coastal path has steps and a few uneven bits, but it’s manageable for most people and dogs with moderate fitness. You have a few walking options.
Gentle Beach Wanders (0.5–1 mile)
An amble along the curve of the beach gives you a proper taste of Porthminster’s calm. Depending on the tide, you can have soft sand or compact wet sand along the way. Any walk will probably take longer than expected as you stop to let your dog paddle or socialise with other dogs. It’s perfect for relaxed pacing and dogs who like to potter.
Street Walk to St Ives Harbour (0.4 mile/700 m)
If you fancy a break from the sand, you are not far from St Ives Harbour and the shops. The short walk takes you through the narrow St Ives streets, with little glimpses of the harbour opening up ahead. If the tide is out, you will pass the all-year dog-friendly Lambeth Beach.
Coastal Path to Carbis Bay (1.2 miles/2 km)
Just at the back of the beach, you have the coast path and a pleasant walk over the headland to Carbis Bay. A cautionary note: Carbis Bay has the same seasonal restrictions as Porthminster.
Coastal Path to Porthkidney Sands (1.6 miles/2.5 km)
For the more energetic, you can continue past Carbis Bay to Porthkidney Sands. Now, this is my favourite beach in St. Ives, as it is dog-friendly all year round and so big that you have no problems with off-lead dogs. You will need to bring everything with you, as there are no facilities once you pass Carbis Bay.
Access and Facilities
Behind the beach, you have the railway station and a car park. The car park fills up very early, and we recommend parking outside St Ives and entering via the branch line.
Facilities include a dog-friendly pub, a dog-friendly cafe terrace, seasonal lifeguards, and toilets. The wider town offers plenty of dog-friendly pubs, cafés and takeaway spots.
