About
Visiting Rinsey Head and Beach with your dog is wonderful, especially if you enjoy exploring rugged coastal landscapes. Rinsey Head is managed by the National Trust and is located just east of Praa Sands. It is a popular distraction from days on the beach or for those walking the coast path to/from Porthleven.
It is known for its dramatic cliffs, historic engine houses, and breathtaking ocean views. The area offers a peaceful escape into nature, away from the busier tourist spots in Cornwall.
Dog Access and Rules
Rinsey Cove Beach, also known as Porthcew Beach, is dog-friendly all year round and located below the Wheal Prosper engine house.
Things To See & Do
Rinsey Head features stunning cliff-top views and wild, natural scenery characteristic of Cornwall’s coastline. The area is part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, and you’ll see remains of the three-storey Wheal Prosper engine house used to pump water from the mine.
The beach is a mixture of pebbles, sand, and large rocks with rock pools. It’s tucked away at the base of cliffs, and at low tide, the beach is excellent for swimming, but at high tide, you have no sand. The beach is relatively secluded, making it an excellent choice for a quiet day by the sea with your dog and avoiding seasonal restrictions on other beaches.
The South West Coast Path runs through Rinsey, offering excellent walking opportunities with panoramic coastal views. This location is perfect for dog walkers looking for challenging but rewarding hikes along the cliffs. Although in places, the cliffs can be unstable, and there are many up-and-down paths, so you need to keep an eye on your dog.
Access and Facilities
A small National Trust car park at Rinsey is a good starting point for walks. Parking is free for National Trust members or available for a fee for non-members.
Access to the beach is via a steep path, which may be challenging for some dogs and their owners. It’s important to assess whether this will suit your dog, especially if they have mobility issues.
Facilities at Rinsey other than the car park are non-existent. Thus, bringing your own supplies, including water and snacks for you and your dog, is essential.
The closest cafes and toilets are at Praa Sands.
