About
Tucked away in Cornwall, The Lost Gardens of Heligan are one of those places you hear about and think, alright, sounds a bit fancy with the name, but then you actually go and it’s something else. It’s not just a garden, it’s more like stepping back into a forgotten story.
The Lost Gardens offer a perfect walk for you and your dog, with numerous pathways and routes to explore, ranging from formal gardens to kitchen gardens, ponds, a jungle, and woodland.
Dog Access and Rules
The Lost Gardens of Heligan is dog-friendly, allowing well-behaved dogs on leads. The only part with a restriction is the rope bridge over the jungle, as dogs can’t walk over it, but it is easy to take turns while one waits with the dog.
Dogs on leads are welcome in both the Heligan Kitchen and The Steward’s House (picture above) when you would like to stop for a drink and a bite to eat on your visit. Water bowls are dotted about, which is handy after a stretch of walking. There are also plenty of shaded areas to stop if your dog needs a break.
Things To See & Do
Heligan was left in ruin since the outbreak of WW1, but was re-awakened in 1990 to become Europe’s largest garden restoration project. Today, Heligan’s 200 acres are a paradise for explorers, wildlife enthusiasts, plant lovers, and garden romantics.
Walking around Heligan isn’t just about pretty flower beds. You’ve got woodlands that feel more like a proper countryside walk, and even little bridges and streams. The Giant’s Head and the Mud Maid are a bit surreal, and while the dog couldn’t care less, I loved standing there thinking how strange and beautiful they are.

We wandered into the Jungle too. You’d swear you’d left Cornwall and walked into somewhere tropical. Tall tree ferns, rope bridges (not dog-friendly), and damp, earthy paths made it a proper adventure.
Access and Facilities
Getting to Heligan is easy enough. It’s just outside Mevagissey and St Austell in Cornwall, with signs pointing you in the right direction once you’re nearby. When we travelled, we relied on our satnav, which took us down some high hedge, single-width Cornwall lanes, which were an experience that you may want to avoid. There’s a large car park on site, so you don’t need to worry about finding a space. However, please note that parking is an additional charge to your entrance ticket.
There are toilets, a farm shop, and cafes where you can grab a bite. The outside seating area is dog-friendly, so you don’t have to skip your cup of tea.
