About
Brough Castle was a seat of the Clifford family for 450 years, located at the upper end of the Eden Valley, and is a spectacular medieval ruin on the site of the Roman fort of Verteris. The castle you see today in ruins dates from the 12th century onwards, but the earthworks represent an earlier castle from the 11th century.
You can go back even earlier to AD 79–80 when you had Verteris, one of a chain of Roman forts guarding the important road from York (Eboracum) to Carlisle (Luguvalium).
Dog Access and Rules
Brough Castle does allow dogs, but you need to keep them on a short lead.
Access and Facilities
You have no facilities at the castle other than information boards. It is on the outskirts of the village, and so you can find parking on the road, and there is a small tearoom nearby.
