A walk to Bolt Tail is a must for any dog owner visiting Hope Cove or this area of the South Devon coast. This stunning headland offers breathtaking views over the sea, rugged cliffs, and an exhilarating walk for you and your dog. Located just a short distance from Hope Cove, Bolt Tail is part of the South West Coast Path steeped in history, where an Iron Age hill fort used to exist and a fascinating landscape shaped by centuries of coastal weather. You can’t see much of the Iron Age Fort today.

Dog Access and Rules
The South West Coast Path is dog-friendly. However, keeping your dog on a lead is essential, especially near cliff edges and grazing livestock, which are common along this stretch. The terrain can be rugged and uneven in places, so it’s best suited to active dogs who enjoy a good adventure.

To reach Bolt Tail, start in Hope Cove, where several parking options and public toilets are nearby. You can pick up the South West Coast Path, which leads westward to Bolt Tail. The walk to Bolt Tail from Hope Cove takes around 30 minutes, though you may want to take your time to enjoy the scenery. The route is well-marked and follows the coast, but bear in mind that there are some steep sections, so it’s a good idea to wear sturdy shoes and bring water for you and your dog.
While Bolt Tail doesn’t have facilities, you’ll find essentials back in Hope Cove.
