About
Hope Cove, a picturesque village on the South Devon coast near Salcombe, is the perfect spot for dog lovers exploring beautiful beaches and coastal paths. Here’s what you need to know about visiting Hope Cove’s dog-friendly beaches and making the most of this scenic spot with your dog.
Dog Access and Rules
Hope Cove has two beaches, Mouthwell Sands (Outer Hope) and Hope Cove (Inner Hope), with different dog policies.
Mouthwell Sands does not allow dogs between 10 am and 7 pm, from 1st May to 30th September, but Hope Cove Beach allows dogs on a lead all year round.
Things To See & Do
Hope Cove is situated along the beautiful South West Coast Path, just a short drive from the popular town of Salcombe. Known for its historic fishing village charm, Hope Cove has a rich maritime history that dates back to the 18th century, with roots as a fishing and smuggling hub. Today, it’s a peaceful retreat with traditional whitewashed cottages, cosy pubs, and two beautiful beaches that offer stunning views of the Devon coast. Despite its tranquil atmosphere, Hope Cove has all the essential amenities and is a fantastic base for exploring the surrounding coastal towns.
The main beach at the Harbour welcomes dogs all year round, so you can take strolls along the shoreline or play a game of fetch with your dog. The beach has some protection from the harbour walls. Mouthwell Sands, also walkable, is a slightly larger sandy beach with rocky areas and pools to explore. Both these beaches provide much more sand to walk on when the tide is low as the space available is restricted at high tide.
The South West Coast Path passes through Hope Cove, offering access to breathtaking coastal paths. A popular choice is the walk to Bolt Tail, a nearby headland with sweeping sea views. Your dog will love the open space, and you’ll both enjoy the fresh air and scenery.
Access and Facilities
Hope Cove is easily accessible by car, has plenty of parking options in the village, and is close to the beaches. If you’re travelling from Salcombe, it’s a short 15-minute drive along scenic coastal roads. For those using public transport, nearby Kingsbridge offers bus connections to Hope Cove, although services can be limited, so check schedules in advance. Once in Hope Cove, the village is compact and easy to navigate on foot.
Public toilets are available near the beach and in the village, and several local pubs and cafes welcome dogs and provide water bowls.
