About
If you and your dog are in the Torquay area and love coastal views, a walk to Thatcher Point and Hope’s Nose is a must. Situated in the stunning Torbay area, these two headlands offer a blend of breathtaking scenery, fresh sea air, and plenty of opportunities for exploration.
Dog Access and Rules
This area is excellent for dogs, although keep your dog on a lead near the cliff edges to ensure its safety. Be mindful of local wildlife, including nesting birds, and keep your dog under control in sensitive areas.
Things To See & Do
Our journey begins at Thatcher Point, a peaceful clifftop spot with sweeping views of the English Channel. The open, grassy spaces allow your dog to stretch its legs before hitting the trails. Thatcher Point is known for its unspoiled beauty, with abundant wildflowers during the spring and summer months.
This is also a prime spot for birdwatching, so pack a pair of binoculars.
From Thatcher Point, follow the coastal path towards Hope’s Nose. This walk section offers a mix of terrains, from grassy trails to rocky paths, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The route winds along the coastline, offering spectacular views of the waters below. On clear days, you might even glimpse seals or dolphins.
Your dog will love the variety of scents and sights along the way. Remember to bring water for both of you, especially on warmer days, as the route can be exposed to the sun. Plenty of spots to pause and take in the views, so don’t rush; this walk is as much about the journey as the destination.
Hope’s Nose is a striking headland, offering incredible views of Torbay and beyond. While you explore, your dog can enjoy sniffing around the grassy areas or resting in the shade of the rocky outcrops.
For those who enjoy photography, this walk includes three rocks visible just out to sea: Thatcher Rock, Lead Stone, and Ore Stone. Together with the walk itself, these rocks provide endless opportunities to capture Devon’s rugged beauty.
If you want a longer walk, you can carry on around the coast and explore some small coves hidden below the wooded hillside.
