Dog Access and Rules
Westward Ho! Beach is dog-friendly year-round, but there are restrictions in the main area from May 1st to September 30th, with dogs only allowed in designated areas.
The area with the seasonal ban is closest to town, so you will need to follow Northam Burrows Road either on foot or by car and enter the beach at Northern Burrows Country Park, also known as Sanymere Beach.

The beach at Westward Ho! stretches for two miles, offering ample space for sunbathing, beach games, and long dog walks. The sand extends at low tide, creating even more room for beachgoers. Although one stretch of sand, sections of the beach have their own names, including Sandymere Beach, Northam Beach and Greysands beach just around the point.
Behind the main beach, there’s a natural pebble ridge, adding to the beach’s unique character and helping protect the area from coastal erosion.
The beach is well-known for its surfing and other watersports, thanks to its favourable waves. Various rental shops and schools in the area offer lessons and equipment rentals for surfing, windsurfing, and kayaking.
Access and Facilities
The beach area features various amenities, including cafes, shops, seasonal lifeguards and public toilets, ensuring you have everything needed for a comfortable day out. These facilities are located near the car parks, offering convenient access.
One of the best access points to the beach other than the town is at the Northam Burrows Country Park Site, and this is the location to head for in the summer to avoid the seasonal dog restrictions.
