About
Mossyard Bay is a beautiful, sheltered-feeling bay on the north side of Fleet Bay, not far from Gatehouse of Fleet.
It is well known for its clear water, sands at lower tide, and peaceful setting. For dog owners, it offers a really pleasant mix of open shoreline, sea air, and a calmer atmosphere that suits both energetic dogs and those who prefer a gentler pace.
The surroundings feel distinctly natural and scenic, so a visit here can feel like a proper coastal escape rather than a quick town-beach stop.
If you want a scenic, generally dog-friendly beach near Gatehouse of Fleet with a quieter feel and lovely Solway views, Mossyard Bay is a great choice.
Dog Access and Rules
Mossyard Bay is dog-friendly all year round, with enough room for sniffy exploring and shoreline strolls.
Bring fresh water, poo bags, and a towel, as you have no facilities.
Things To See & Do
A classic Mossyard Bay outing is a shoreline walk with plenty of time for sniffing, paddling, and gentle exploration of the rocks and small beach areas.
As you reach Mossyard Bay, you have a few beach areas that join up at lower tides. If the tide is out, make your way round towards Garvellan Rocks, where you’ll find the Mossyard Millennium Labyrinth, a fascinating stone spiral set into the rocks.
At lower tide, there is more sand to enjoy, making it easier to stretch the walk and find space. At higher tide, the beach can feel smaller, with a lot more rocks than sand, so timing your visit around tide conditions can make a big difference to how much room you have.
Access and Facilities
Mossyard Bay is straightforward for a dog day out, but it is best treated as a bring-what-you-need beach.
Parking is available close to the beach. Nearby amenities are limited, although there is a little farm shop just before the car park, so carrying your own water, bowl, snacks, and other supplies is the safest plan.
The nearby village of Gatehouse of Fleet offers some eating options, although the better bet is Kirkudbright with plenty of shops, cafes, pubs and eateries.
