Black Rock Sands Beach, near Porthmadog in North Wales, is a fantastic choice for a day out with your dog. Known for its vast sandy expanse, convenient vehicle access, and unique landscape, it’s a perfect destination for pet-friendly exploration.
Black Rock Sands Beach is known by many names, often referred to as Porthmadog Beach, Craig Du, or Morfa Bychan Beach after the local village.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are not allowed on the northern end of the beach between 1st April and 30th September. These are clearly signposted, leaving the rest of the beach open for dogs and their owners to enjoy year-round.
You need to be aware, due to its size and ability to park on the sand, the beach is very popular over the winter months with “on-the-beach” activities like kitebuggies, land yachting, and beach buggies.
Things To See & Do
The extensive, almost 2 miles of wide-open sands are great for energetic dogs who love to run and play. With plenty of space, even during peak times, it rarely feels overcrowded.
The beach offers breathtaking views of Tremadog Bay and the Snowdonia mountains, providing a stunning backdrop for a seaside adventure.
In addition to long walks on the beach, explore the sand dune system designated as a site of special scientific interest and the distinctive rocky areas that punctuate the beach, giving Black Rock Sands its name.
Access and Facilities
One of the unique features of Black Rock Sands Beach is that you can drive your vehicle directly onto the sand. This is incredibly convenient for dog owners, as you can bring all your gear right to your chosen spot.
Toilets are available close to the beach, and there are shops and cafes nearby for refreshments.
The village of Morfa Bychan has shops and places to eat. The town of Porthmadog, about two miles from the beach, has more facilities.
