About
The Chess Valley follows the River Chess as it passes through the Chilterns, linking places like Rickmansworth, Chenies, Latimer, and Chesham. It rises near Chesham and flows for 18km (11 miles) through Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, a gentle landscape, clear chalk streams, low meadows, old mills, and paths.
Walking here with a dog feels gentle and grounding. The river is never far away. The ground stays soft underfoot, and the valley invites you to slow down, match your pace to the water, and just be where you are.
Dog-Friendly Policies
The Chess Valley is largely open access countryside, with a mix of public footpaths, permissive routes and quiet lanes.
- Dogs are welcome throughout, but leads are often needed
- Keep dogs on leads near livestock
- Some paths run close to the river, which can tempt water-loving dogs
- Bins are limited, especially between villages
- Expect a peaceful, shared-use atmosphere with walkers, and cyclists

The Chess Valley runs through Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, following the River Chess through the Chilterns. You can walk the whole route, as car parks and train stations are available at either end in Rickmansworth and Chesham, and also in Little Chalfont along the route.

If you don’t fancy the whole length, then a popular loop is between Chesham and Latimer, which is approximately 4 miles.
Alternatively, you can stop at any of the villages like Chenies or Little Chalfont and take a stroll for as long as you want.
Access and Facilities
Our map shows the Rickmansworth end, but parking is available in towns like Chesham, Chenies, and Rickmansworth. The whole valley has good rail and bus links.
