About
Duart Castle is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, and although you can’t enter the castle, you can enjoy its stunning surroundings with your dog. The castle is positioned on a high crag at the end of a peninsula overlooking the Sound of Mull.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are not allowed inside Duart Castle or tearoom but are welcome to explore the castle grounds. The area surrounding the castle is expansive, with plenty of grassy spaces for your dog to enjoy. Dogs must be kept on a lead while walking around the grounds as you often have sheep grazing.
Things To See & Do
The Keep was built by Chief Lachlan Lubanach Maclean and is a substantial defensive structure. The walls are 29 feet (9m) high and 10 feet (3m) thick on the vulnerable landward side, while the walls facing the sea are less thick, ranging from 5 to 9 feet (1.8m to 2.4m). While the castle’s interior is out of reach for dogs, the area around it and its scenic views make it a fantastic place for dogs to visit.
The grounds around Duart Castle are perfect for a scenic walk with your dog. You’ll be treated to beautiful coastline views, the Sound of Mull, and the rugged landscape surrounding the castle. It’s an excellent opportunity to take memorable photos with your dog against the dramatic backdrop of the castle and hills.
In the summer, you can take guided tours of the grounds, which allow you to see the best places and views and learn more about the history.
Several walking routes start near the castle if you and your dog are up for more exploration. These trails allow you to enjoy the natural beauty of Mull, including coastal paths and woodland walks.
Access and Facilities
Duart Castle is located on the eastern coast of the Isle of Mull, around 3 miles from the ferry terminal at Craignure, making it easily accessible by car. The drive from Craignure to the castle is short and scenic, and there’s a car park near the castle where you can leave your vehicle.
