About
Laggan Sands, located on the Isle of Mull, is an expansive sandy shore with stunning views of Loch Buie. This secluded beach offers the perfect spot for a quiet walk and a place for your dog to run free, a great choice for dog owners seeking a slice of Mull’s unspoilt natural beauty.
Dog Access and Rules
Laggan Sands is dog-friendly. Itโs a spacious beach where dogs can run off-lead, but keeping them under control is essential, especially when they are around wildlife and other visitors.
Things To See & Do
Laggan Sands is located on the southern coast of the Isle of Mull, at the head of Loch Buie, near the small village of Lochbuie.
Historically, this part of Mull has been tied to the Clan Maclaine of Lochbuie, who once ruled the area. On one side of the bay, you have the ruins of Moy Castle, an ancient stronghold that overlooks the loch. Today, Laggan Sands is more commonly known for its peaceful, unspoiled beauty, making it a favourite with visitors who enjoy nature.
At low tide, the bay is an expanse of sand, while at high tide, you are left with several smaller beaches split by small rock outcrops, all of which should be explored. Much of the high water mark sand is interspersed with rocks, but the bay is ideal for strolling along the shoreline, taking in the stunning views of Loch Buie and the surrounding hills while your dog runs free.
If your dog enjoys a swim, the calm waters of Loch Buie are perfect for a paddle. The shallow waters at the beach’s edge make it easy for dogs to splash around safely while you can sit back and enjoy the peaceful scenery.
Like many beaches on this island, the area around Laggan Sands is rich with wildlife. Look for birds, seals, and other marine life that often frequent the area. Just be sure to keep your dog from disturbing any wildlife.
Make sure you cover the whole beach, including a walk to Moy Castle, which offers a mix of history and nature.
Access and Facilities
Laggan Sands is about 40 minutes from Craignure, where the ferry from the mainland arrives, making it easily accessible by car. From Craignure, take the road towards Lochbuie. The drive takes you through stunning Mull countryside, with single-track roads that wind through the hills. There is a small car park close to the beach.
As Laggan Sands is quite remote, no public toilets or food facilities are nearby, be sure to bring supplies, including water and snacks, for yourself and your dog.
