About
Llyn Alaw is the largest reservoir on Anglesey, built-in 1966. It supplies water to much of the island. It’s a haven for nature lovers, surrounded by gently rolling hills and open countryside. The reservoir is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its large numbers of wildfowl and common terns, which have set their nests on one of the lake’s islands. It’s a great place for peaceful dog walks and birdwatching.
The reservoir covers an area of approximately 350ha and is 4.8 km long. A network of paths winds around parts of the reservoir, providing varied routes that let you enjoy different perspectives of the water and surrounding landscape.
Dog Access and Rules
The reservoir is dog-friendly. However, because this is a protected area for wildlife, it’s essential always to keep your dog on a lead.
Access and Facilities
Llyn Alaw is located in the northern part of Anglesey, about a 20-minute drive from Llangefni. The easiest way to reach it is by car, with parking near the reservoir. Be aware that this location is remote, so facilities are limited.
Bring binoculars if you’re interested in birdwatching, as Llyn Alaw is a hotspot for migratory birds. Also, wear sturdy shoes as the paths can get muddy after rain.
