About
Watermead Country Park is located north of Leicester and features the Birstall and Reedbed Nature Reserves, which run alongside the River Soar and the Grand Union Canal. The park is a big jigsaw puzzle of lakes and trails, each with its own character. Surfaced paths throughout the park provide opportunities for walking, running, and cycling, and many seats along these trails are ideal places to sit and enjoy the environment. You also have designated picnic areas.
The lakes were originally sand and gravel pits that, in the 1980s, were acquired by City and Borough councils to turn into parks.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome throughout most of Watermead Country Park. Because the park is full of wildlife, especially waterfowl, there are times when you’ll want to call your dog back in. Most dogs handle it well, but it’s good to be mindful. Some lakes are protected areas too, so dogs aren’t allowed to swim.
If cattle are out grazing, keep your dog close. The paths are wide enough to step aside and let them get on with their day.
Things To See & Do
You don’t need to take any formal routes, but here are some suggested routes:
- The Mini Lakeside Loop — 1 mile
A lovely, gentle wander around one of the smaller lakes with easy views and plenty of sniffs for your dog. Ideal if you’re looking for a simple dog walk. - Main Lake & Reedbed Circuit — 2.5 miles
This route gives you the best mix of everything: open water, bird hides, reedbeds, and a few quiet pockets where you can stop and take it all in. - River Soar & King Lear Trail — 3–4 miles
If you want a slightly longer outing, this trail takes you past the King Lear statue and along the river. It’s flat all the way and perfect for walkers who like a bit more variety without any climbs.
Access and Facilities
There are several possible entry points to the park, and the postcode on this page directs you to the North car park.
You’ve got a few choices for a post-walk treat. If you prefer a proper pub lunch, our favourite is The White Horse by the canal and river in Birstall, where dogs are welcome in the bar area and garden.
