About
Abbey Park is just outside the centre of Leicester, where the River Soar divides this beautiful park into two distinct areas:
- On the western side of the river are the fascinating Abbey Grounds, with the remains of the twelfth-century Leicester Abbey and the ruins of Cavendish House, a seventeenth-century mansion. Abbey Park Cafe, which allows well-behaved dogs, is also on this side of the park.
- To the east of the river lies the highly decorative Victorian part of the park with its evergreen shrubberies, trees, boating lake, miniature railway, and formally planted flower displays.
Dog Access and Rules
Because Abbey Park is more structured than countryside walks, staying mindful of the wildlife helps everyone enjoy their visit. The lake areas can get busy with birds, and the paths near the animal corner require dogs on leads. The open lawns are perfect for a relaxed stroll, though, and your dog will still get plenty of movement.
If your dog prefers quieter spaces, heading towards the edges of the park or sticking to the riverside stretches often gives you a calmer walk.
Access and Facilities
The park cafe usually offers outdoor seating where dogs are welcome, and it’s a nice spot to grab a drink while your dog settles beside you. If you’re up for a bit more exploring, Leicester city centre is close enough for a wander, where you’ll find several dog-friendly cafes tucked away in side streets.
