Beningbrough welcomes dogs, making it a fantastic choice for a day trip with your canine companion.
Dogs on short leads are allowed in most of the formal gardens, including the walled garden, pergola, south lawn, east and west formal gardens, and double and south borders.
The shop, designated tables in the restaurant, the restaurantโs outdoor seating area,ย and the brewhouse (when open) are also dog-friendly.
Dogs are prohibited from the hall, laundry and wilderness play area.
Things To See & Do
Beningbrough is located near York, nestled along the banks of the River Ouse. It’s easily accessible from the city and offers a peaceful retreat into the countryside. The centrepiece is Beningbrough Hall, a grand 18th-century mansion surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens.
The estate has a rich history. Ralph Bourchier built the Elizabethan house, which showcases baroque architecture. It has seen various changes in ownership and function over the centuries. The National Trust now manages it, and the hall’s historical significance is complemented by its art collections, including works on loan from the National Portrait Gallery.
During the Second World War, Lady Chesterfield moved into the adjacent farm, and the house was used as a billet for the RAF base at Linton-on-Ouse.
Today, Beningbrough offers a variety of activities that you and your dog can enjoy together:
- Garden Walks: Stroll through the 8 acres of beautifully maintained gardens, where you can enjoy seasonal displays of flowers and plants. Though dogs are restricted to certain areas, the walled garden is a highlight.
- Park & Woodland Trails: Explore the 380 acres of parkland and woodlands, perfect for a leisurely walk or a more energetic hike.
- Riverside Walks: The River Ouse is nearby, allowing you to enjoy picturesque riverside walks. They’re a serene experience, especially on a sunny day.
Access and Facilities
An entrance ticket to Beningbrough isn’t needed to explore the parkland and car parking is free of charge for parkland users.
The walled garden restaurant serves a wide range of food and drinks, while the brewhouse (open on the busiest days) is an excellent choice for refreshments on the move.
You also have the stables shop, which offers a large selection of products inspired by National Trust or locally sourced.
