About
Redcar has around 12km (8 miles) of beaches.
From the main beach, wander north to Coatham Sands and the Tees Estuary or south past quieter spots like Granville and Stray Beach, reaching Marske and further.
The feeling of space stands out. Even on busy days, you can usually find your own area. For dogs, that freedom makes a big difference.
The beach has a classic seaside feel: promenade walks, fish and chips, and bracing North Sea air.
Dog Access and Rules
Redcar is generally dog-friendly, but during peak season (1st May to 30th Sept), dogs are excluded from signed zones in the main town areas of Redcar, Marske, and Saltburn.
These zones mainly cover the busy central beach areas and are clearly marked.
What this means for you:
- You can walk your dog year-round by choosing quieter stretches.
- Coatham Sands and Stray Beach are good alternatives.
- Outside peak season, dogs can roam much more freely.
Things To See & Do
Redcar Beach is backed by a classic esplanade with most facilities, including a pier and amusements. Beyond the town, the beaches grow quieter and wilder.
Running north from Redcar Beach, you have Coatham Sands, a long stretch of sand backed by dunes. Just around the tip and in the mouth of the Tees Estuary, you have Bran Sands, a sandy beach with marsh and mud flats. The dune system and marshes are a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Moving south from Redcar, you have the small Granville Beach, which is still in the town, before hitting the long stretch of sand, starting as Stray Beach before joining Marske Sands and finishing at Saltburn.
Redcar excels with miles of open sand, perfect for dogs who love a good run.
Head away from the main town to find calmer spots that feel more open and peaceful.
If your dog needs a rest from the sand, stroll the flat promenade for sea views.
Access and Facilities
Redcar is one of the easier coastal spots to visit, with everything close by.
There are lots of parking locations and dog-friendly places to eat along this Redcar stretch of coastline.
