About
Blyth Beach, or Blyth South Beach, as it is often known, is a wide, open stretch of sand on the Northumberland coast, sitting just south of the more celebrated beaches further north around Alnmouth and Bamburgh.
Blyth is a working coastal town, and the beach reflects that, broad and practical, with a long pier, the industrial outline of the harbour to one side and open North Sea views. There is plenty of room, it rarely feels overcrowded outside peak summer days, and the flat sandy surface makes for easy, comfortable walking in most conditions.
For dog owners in particular, South Beach is a reliable option. The sands stretch far enough that even on a busier day you can usually find space, and the surrounding dune areas and coastal paths mean there is scope to extend the walk well beyond the beach itself.
Dog Access and Rules
Like many beaches on the Northumberland coast, Blyth South Beach has seasonal dog restrictions in place from 1 May to 30 September.
During this period, dogs are excluded from the designated section of the main beach from the beach access at Beachway to the beach access at the southern end of the Links Road car park.
Outside restricted zones during summer, and throughout the day outside the seasonal period — Blyth is generally a very good beach for dogs. The wide sands, flat terrain and relatively uncrowded here make it well suited to dogs that enjoy space and freedom. Leads are sensible near the car park access points, near the harbour area, and wherever the beach becomes busier.
Dogs are welcome on leads along the pier and around the harbour area year-round, giving additional walking options even when main beach sections are restricted.
Things To See & Do
Blyth South Beach is best enjoyed as a straightforward, satisfying coastal walk rather than a destination with lots of structured activity.
The main pleasure is simply the beach itself: a long stretch of flat sand with sea views east and the low dune line behind. For dogs, the combination of open sand, sea smells and space makes for a highly enjoyable outing. Many dogs particularly enjoy the water’s edge here, as the beach shelves gently and the surf is generally manageable.
The pier is worth walking if conditions allow. It gives a good perspective on the bay and the working harbour, and the walk out along it and back is an easy addition to a beach outing.
Heading south from the town, footpaths track through and behind the dune system, connecting with wider coastal walking routes.
Access and Facilities
Blyth South Beach is one of the more practical Northumberland beach options if you are travelling with a dog and want straightforward access.
The car park near South Beach makes arrival easy, and it is large enough to accommodate most visits without difficulty. A small retail centre with cafe, fish & chips and toilet facilities is available near the beach.
The sand is generally firm and flat, which makes it easy going underfoot for both people and dogs. There is limited shade on the beach itself, and like all east-facing North Sea beaches it can be exposed on windy days.
