About
Caldey Island, located off the coast of Tenby in Pembrokeshire, is a serene and picturesque destination. Known for its monastic heritage and natural beauty, Caldey is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide at its widest, a great place to explore with your dog. Here’s what you need to know to plan your visit.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on Caldey, but they must always be on a lead.
Things To See & Do
There are plenty of things to do on Caldey, and although dogs are not allowed in some buildings, it is well worth a visit.
You will arrive at a jetty on Priory Bay Beach, which is well worth a stroll or a spot to relax or have a dip after a walk around the island. You and your dog have some choices from the beach: head into the village or take to the coast and enjoy one of the many walks around the island’s coastline. Island maps are available to help you plan your day.
As you explore the island, you’ll encounter several fascinating historical sites, each with a unique story. The Old Priory, Sy Iltyd’s Church, and St David’s Church are among the places you can visit. Please note that the Abbey and Monastic Enclosure are not open to the public.
The monks are known for making chocolate and perfume, which you can buy in the shop. You can also visit the chocolate factory, although dogs are not allowed inside, to see how it’s made.
Although there are several coves with beaches on the island (Sandtop Bay, Jone’s Bay, Bullum’s Bay), Priory Bay is the only one with public access.
The island boasts diverse, well-marked walking trails that offer breathtaking views of the landscapes, lighthouse, cliffs, and coastline. As you traverse these trails, you might be lucky to spot various wildlife, including birds, seals, and the elusive red squirrels. This promises an exciting and memorable experience for nature enthusiasts.
Access and Facilities
The Island is open from Easter to the end of October, weather permitting, although closed on Sundays.
This small island is only accessible by a 20-minute boat trip from Tenby Harbour. In the village, a tea garden cafe with an outdoor seating area offers hot and cold snacks and drinks. There are also toilets and a shop selling gifts, such as Caldey perfume and chocolate.
