Dog Access and Rules
Carew Castle and Mill is one of the more relaxed historic attractions to visit with a dog.
Dogs are welcome throughout both the castle and mill as long as they’re kept on a lead. There are grassy spaces to pause for a rest, plenty of shaded areas and water bowls are often available near the visitor facilities.
As always, be mindful of other visitors and the resident wildlife around the millpond.
The castle does have some steep, narrow staircases to navigate, which may pose a problem for some older or anxious dogs.
Things To See & Do
Standing stately beside a peaceful millpond, Carew Castle is an impressive Welsh castle.
The site has transformed over centuries, from an Iron Age fort to a Norman castle, and later to an elegant Tudor mansion. Today, you can roam through its ruined towers, grand halls and spiral staircases while imagining what life was like hundreds of years ago.
Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the site, letting you explore together while absorbing up the history.
Explore at Your Own Pace
One of the best things about Carew Castle is that there’s no hurry.
You can wander through the impressive ruins, discover hidden corners, climb the towers and appreciate panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. Audio information is available throughout the site, bringing the castle’s fascinating history to life without overwhelming you.
The spacious grounds also give your dog plenty of interesting sights and smells to enjoy as you explore.
Don’t Miss the Tidal Mill
Included with your admission is entry to the nearby Carew Tidal Mill, around a 10-minute walk from the castle along a lane at the edge of the millpond.
The walk itself is a level path with beautiful views across the water. Keep an eye out for swans, herons and other wildlife that call the millpond home.
The tidal mill is one of the last remaining examples of its kind in Britain. Inside, you’ll discover how the mill overcomes the problems posed by tides when you need flowing water all day, and how this power was used to grind grain, with restored machinery helping to tell the story.
It’s a fascinating addition to the castle visit.
A Lovely Walk Around the Millpond
If you enjoy stretching your legs, you can continue around parts of the millpond after visiting the mill.
The peaceful waters attract plenty of wildlife, making this an enjoyable walk for both you and your dog. The reflections of the castle across the water are particularly beautiful on calm days, so don’t forget your camera.
It’s a completely different atmosphere from the busy beaches around Tenby and offers a welcome chance to slow down.
Access and Facilities
Allow around three to four hours if you’d like to explore both the castle and the tidal mill without feeling hurried.
