Things To See & Do
At the southern tip of Shetland’s Mainland, Grutness Beach offers dramatic views over the North Sea and is just a short distance from Sumburgh Head. The area has a rich history, tied closely to Shetland’s maritime heritage, with local ferries connecting visitors to the nearby island of Fair Isle. A rugged beach with sand, pebbles, and some large rocks offers an authentic slice of Shetland’s natural beauty — all be it next to a runway.
At Grutness Beach, you and your dog can enjoy uninterrupted walks along the shoreline. However, you must be careful about your dog entering the water, as it can be rough.
The beach and surrounding area are excellent places to observe seabirds and seals, so bring your binoculars! Remember to keep your dog on a lead around wildlife to avoid disturbance.
From Grutness Beach, you can access walking routes leading to nearby Sumburgh Head and enjoy panoramic views.
Access and Facilities

A small car park near the beach makes access convenient for visitors. If you’re not driving, buses from Lerwick can take you to Sumburgh, and the beach is a short walk from the bus stop.
Grutness Beach’s facilities are limited, with just a few car parking spaces and some public toilets nearer the ferry pier.
