About
St Ninian’s Isle Beach is one of the Shetland Islands’ most remarkable natural treasures. Its unique feature is a tombolo, a stunning natural sand causeway connecting the mainland to St Ninian’s Isle.
Dog Access and Rules
St Ninian’s Isle Beach is dog-friendly, although keep an eye out for livestock as you will then need a lead.
Things To See & Do
Nestled near the village of Bigton, St Ninian’s Isle Beach offers a stunning gateway to the small isle of the same name. The tombolo connecting the two is among the largest active examples in Europe. Historically, the isle has been a site of archaeological interest, including discovering a treasure hoard of Pictish artefacts in 1958.
The beach is a great place for a run, but it is well worth looking around St Ninians Isle, as it offers great views, a wide range of seabirds, and archaeological finds. This rich history adds depth to an already unforgettable visit.
Access and Facilities
Reaching St Ninian’s Isle Beach is straightforward. It is located southwest of Lerwick, the Shetland Islands’ main town. There is ample parking by the beach.
