About
Sumburgh Head offers coastal views, wildlife, and scenic walks. The headland at the southern tip of Shetland’s Mainland is steeped in history and provides an excellent environment for you and your dog friend to enjoy the great outdoors.
Dog Access and Rules
Sumburgh Head welcomes dogs, but there are a few essential guidelines to follow. Due to the area’s cliffs and abundant wildlife, especially the seabird colonies, you should keep your dog on a lead.
Dogs are allowed in outside spaces at Jarlshof but not covered areas or within the Lighthouse.
Things To See & Do
Sumburgh Head is located at the southernmost point of Mainland Shetland, offering breathtaking panoramic views over the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Historically, the area has been of great maritime significance. The Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, designed by renowned engineer Robert Stevenson in 1821, is one of the key landmarks. It still stands proudly on the headland, guiding ships safely through Shetland’s treacherous waters.
Sumburgh Head is also part of Shetland’s National Nature Reserve, home to various seabirds, including puffins, razorbills, and fulmars. The area is steeped in history, with the nearby Jarlshof Prehistoric and Norse Settlement offering insights into ancient civilisations dating back over 4,000 years.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy with your dog at Sumburgh Head. Explore the dramatic 100m cliffs, coastal paths and beaches. The walking trails are perfect for soaking up the rugged landscape and spectacular sea views. Your dog will love the fresh sea air and the chance to roam (while on a lead) in this open, natural space.
While you’re here, look for the incredible wildlife. From puffins to seals, the diversity is fascinating. Just keep your dog on a lead to avoid disturbing the wildlife.
While your dog must stay outside, you can take turns exploring the lighthouse and visitor centre. The surrounding outdoor space still offers plenty to discover with your furry friend.
Access and Facilities
Sumburgh Head is easily accessible by car and is around a 30-minute drive from Lerwick, Shetland’s main town. There is a designated parking area near the lighthouse, which makes it convenient for visitors. Alternatively, local buses also run from Lerwick to Sumburgh Airport, a short distance from the headland, followed by a pleasant walk.
Although Sumburgh Head is a natural and historic site, a few facilities are available. The Sumburgh Head Lighthouse Visitor Centre and gift shop offer insight into the area’s history and wildlife. Near the lighthouse, there is a small cafe with outside picnic tables where you can grab a hot drink or snack. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating areas.
