Southerndown Beach, or Dunraven Bay Beach, is a sand and pebble west-facing beach popular with families and watersports. Due to its unspoilt scenery and remoteness, the beach has been used in films and TV series that include Doctor Who and Merlin.
Southerndown Beach has a dog ban between the 1st of May and the 30th of September each year.
When the tide is out, you have a great sand expanse and many rock pools, a good place to look for fossils amongst the rocks. The headland is Witches Point, designated under SSSI for geological importance.
Southerndown Beach facilities include car parking, toilets, a cafe, and lifeguards in the summer.
There are many good dog walking coastal walks nearby, including the remains of Dunraven Castle and its walled garden.
Monknash Beach is backed by cliffs to the South, just over the headland that rarely has anyone on it, partly due to the steep cliff steps. Monknash Beach is an all-year dog-friendly beach, one of the largest in Glamorgan, but be careful, as tide conditions can cut you off from the steps.
