About
West Wittering Beach overlooks the Solent and Chichester Harbour, with the South Downs as a beautiful backdrop.
This is an excellent family destination with a sandy beach and a large grassy area for parking and sunbathing. There are tidal pools ideal for children to explore and indulge in a little crab fishing. Although it is mostly a sandy beach, there are patches of shingle and some dunes.
West Wittering works best when you lean into timing. It can be busy, yes, but it’s also one of those beaches that opens up beautifully when you catch it at the right moment.
For dog walks, it offers something quite simple and powerful, an open space where you and your dog can just keep moving, exploring and slowing down together by the sea.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome at West Wittering Beach, but access is seasonal and zoned.
Key points:
- From May to September, dogs are not allowed in the main central bathing zone (around the beach huts and lifeguarded area)
- Dogs are allowed in other sections of the beach year-round
- The western end towards East Head is a popular dog-friendly stretch, even in summer
- From autumn through spring, restrictions are lifted, and dogs can access the whole beach
You could always drop a few miles down the coast to the dog-friendly East Wittering Beach.
Things To See & Do
Long Beach walks are the main draw.
At low tide, you can walk for miles, across firm sand with your dog, exploring the shoreline and tidal pools. It feels wide, open and calming, especially when the beach is quiet.
Exploring East Head dunes is a great option. Walk towards the sandy spit at the harbour entrance for a more natural, wild-feeling experience as the dunes here feel different from the main beach areas.
For calmer moments, there are quieter stretches away from the main entrance where you can sit, watch the tide and let your dog cool off by the water.
Access and Facilities
Facilities include toilets, outdoor showers, a dog-friendly cafe, beach hut and deckchair hire, surfboard hire, pay parking and lifeguards in the summer months.
Parking can be booked in advance, an option on hot summer days when it can be full.
