Castletown Beach sits at the heart of one of the Isle of Man’s most characterful towns, tucked into the island’s sheltered southern tip.
The beach itself is a pleasant mix of sand and pebbles, backed by a working harbour and overlooked by the imposing towers of Castle Rushen, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the British Isles, although not dog-friendly. It is a distinctive setting that makes even a simple dog walk feel a little special. The harbour walls, the old limestone buildings and the views out across Castletown Bay give the whole area a calm, unhurried atmosphere that is hard not to enjoy.

Castletown Beach is generally dog-friendly and popular with dog walkers, particularly outside the busiest summer months.
There are no blanket seasonal restrictions on the main beach area. Dogs are welcome on the harbour-side paths and the coastal routes that extend from the town towards Scarlett Point to the south-west.
Keeping your dog on a lead or under close control is sensible around the harbour, near other visitors and in the town itself. If you head out along the coastal path towards Scarlett, be aware that the area is a designated nature reserve with important limestone grassland and geological features, so staying on footpaths and keeping dogs under control is important there.
Bring poo bags, fresh water and a lead for busier stretches, and a towel if your dog is likely to make the most of the sea.
Things To See & Do
One of the great pleasures of Castletown is that there is genuinely a lot to explore beyond the beach itself.
Starting at the beach and harbour, you can enjoy a relaxed walk along the waterfront with views across the bay and back towards Castle Rushen. From there, the coastal path south-west towards Scarlett Point is a lovely extension, taking you along a rugged limestone coastline with rock pools and big open views. It is a short but scenic walk, and dogs tend to love the varied terrain and sea smells.
Heading back through Castletown gives you the chance to wander the old town streets, pass the castle and enjoy the quiet charm of what was once the island’s ancient capital. It is a good place for a relaxed morning or afternoon, mixing coastal air with a bit of history and character.
If you want to explore further afield, the wider Castletown Bay area and the nearby village of Ballasalla are both within easy reach for a longer outing.
