About
Colona Beach is a small, quiet cove near St Austell. It often goes unnoticed, making it a perfect stop for peaceful walks with your dog.
The beach is a mixture of sand, pebbles, and rocks, bordered by cliffs and greenery. At low tide, more sand emerges, giving more space, but at high tide, the cove feels smaller and more dramatic as the sea hits the rocks.
If you enjoy quieter corners of the Cornish coast where you can take your time and let your dog explore at their own pace, Colona Beach offers a simple, calm getaway by the sea.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome at Colona Beach year-round.
This means dogs can enjoy the beach off-lead when conditions allow. However, it’s always sensible to keep your dog under control, as you can get livestock on the paths and the beach itself.
Things To See & Do
Colona Beach is ideal for a stop off on a coastal walk rather than a single beach day. You will typically start from either Mevagissey to the north or Gorran Haven in the south. If you start from Mevagissey, you can also include a stop at Portmellon on the way.
At low tide, dogs can enjoy sniffing along the sand and weaving around the rocks. The rocky edges of the beach reveal small rock pools, which can be fun to explore together.
The surrounding cliffs also give the cove a sense of shelter and provide lovely views along the coastline. If you enjoy coastal walking, nearby sections of the South West Coast Path offer longer routes linking neighbouring beaches and viewpoints.
For many visitors, the joy here is simply the quiet.
Access and Facilities
Colona Beach is a natural, undeveloped cove, so there are no facilities.
You should expect a simple beach experience and come prepared. The best options for parking, with toilets, are in Mevagissey or Gorran Haven. Note that Portmellon is a little closer but has limited parking, so it’s best to park at Mevagissey and include a visit to Portmellon in the walk to Colona.
