About
Situated beneath rolling farmland on Cornwall’s south coast, Hemmick Beach is a quiet cove that feels distinctly removed from the busy resort beaches. Situated near St Austell and close to the harbour village of Gorran Haven, the beach lies within the expanses of St Austell Bay.
The cove has soft sand, clear water, and a gently sloping shoreline, giving it a calm, relaxed feel. Low cliffs and green fields frame the bay, while the open views across St Austell Bay create a lovely sense of space.
For dog owners, Hemmick Beach is a hidden gem, and its sheltered setting offers an ideal place for a relaxed seaside walk with your dog.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on Hemmick Beach all year round with no summer restrictions.
Things To See & Do
At low tide, the beach expands, giving ample space to roam with your dog. Though the beach isn’t large, it’s ideal for a leisurely walk along the shoreline. Dogs that enjoy paddling will often find calm, shallow water.
Because Hemmick is tucked away from larger towns, it feels peaceful. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly enchanting, as the light over St Austell Bay softens and the beach grows still quieter.
The surrounding coastline includes several other beautiful spots that are easy to combine into a day out, such as Gorran Haven, where three small beaches are within walking distance of each other.
A short coastal drive also leads to Vault Beach, another peaceful, dog-friendly spot known for its scenic setting.
Nearby sections of the South West Coast Path offer longer scenic walks above the cliffs at Dodman Point. These paths are perfect if you want to turn a beach visit into a more adventurous coastal walk with your dog.
Access and Facilities
Hemmick Beach remains relatively simple and natural, which is part of its appeal.
Hemmick Beach has no facilities and no parking. It may appear there are a few parking places on the road by the beach, but you should not park here, as it is a passing point on the narrow single-width lane. Probably the best option is to park at the Dodman National Trust car park up the hill, then a 1km walk down.
Nearby villages such as Gorran Haven offer cafes and places to stop for food after your walk.
