About
Tucked along Cornwall’s quieter south coast, Portholland Beach is a small and characterful coastal spot made up of two neighbouring coves. Sitting within St Austell Bay, the beach lies a short distance from St Austell and close to the scenic headland of Dodman Point.
Both coves have a traditional Cornish feel, with stone cottages and the two beaches are called East Portholland and West Portholland.
Though the beaches are small, they offer coastal views and a slower pace than those found in Cornwall’s busier resorts. For dog owners, it’s a pleasant spot for a short walk or a relaxing pause along the coastline.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome on the Portholland Beaches throughout the year.
Because the beaches are small and close to the village, keep dogs under control and mindful of other visitors during busy times
Things To See & Do
One of the simple pleasures of Portholland is wandering between the two small coves. At low tide, you can enjoy exploring the sand and rocky edges around the harbour wall.
Dogs often enjoy sniffing along the tide line or exploring the small rock pools that appear as the water recedes.
The peaceful village setting makes Portholland ideal for a short, relaxed dog walk by the sea. Early mornings and evenings are especially lovely, when the coves feel calm and uncrowded.
The surrounding coastline links to the South West Coast Path, offering longer scenic walks. From Portholland, you can head toward Dodman Point, one of the highest headlands on Cornwall’s south coast.
The clifftop paths provide sweeping views perfect for stretching your dog’s legs.
Several other beautiful beaches sit nearby along this stretch of coast, including Porthluney Cove and Hemmick Beach. Many combine a visit to Portholland with a visit to nearby coves.
Access and Facilities
Portholland is a small coastal village, so facilities are limited, but the atmosphere is wonderfully authentic.
Facilities include a small parking area near the east beach and a cafe. The cafe is not dog-friendly, but plenty of places to have a takeaway.
