About
Pentire Head is a headland between Polzeath and Port Quin. There are actually two main areas here โ Pentire Point (westerly closer to Polzeath) and The Rumps to the east, where you’ll find some of the most striking cliff formations in the area.
It’s not a “destination” in the traditional sense. It’s more of a place for walks with your dog trotting happily beside you. If you’re exploring Polzeath, don’t skip this. It might just end up being your favourite part of the trip.
Dog Access and Rules
Pentire Head is wonderfully dog-friendly year-round, making it a great alternative (or addition) to nearby beaches like Polzeath, which have daytime seasonal restrictions.
That said, it’s a natural, open landscape, so a bit of awareness goes a long way:
- Keep dogs under control near cliff edges, as some drops are steep and unfenced.
- You may encounter livestock grazing, so be ready for leads.
- Ground-nesting birds can be present, so it’s worth being aware of where your dog is roaming.
There’s loads of space here, so you’ll often find quieter stretches where your dog can enjoy a bit more freedom safely.
Things To See & Do
A circular walk out to The Rumps gives you incredible coastal views and a real sense of Cornwall’s rugged beauty. On a clear day, you can see for miles. Waves rolling in, and cliffs stretching out.
In warmer months, the headland comes alive, filled with wildflowers. It adds colour to the landscape and makes the walk feel even more special.
You can easily turn this into a longer walk by connecting with the South West Coast Path towards Polzeath for a beach stop (depending on the season), or Port Quin for something more peaceful.
Sometimes the best thing to do here isโฆ not much at all. A great alternative to sandy beaches is to sit for a while. Let your dog rest beside you. Take it in.
Access and Facilities
Pentire keeps things simple, which is part of its charm.
Parking available at the National Trust car park at Pentireglaze Haven or additional parking in Polzeath, both a short walk to the headland.
The nearest toilets and cafes are either in Polzeath village or at Pentireglaze Haven NT car park.
