About
Porth Joke (also known as Polly Joke) is a quiet, unspoilt sandy cove just west of Newquay, tucked between headlands and surrounded by dunes and open countryside. It feels wonderfully wild compared with the busier beaches nearby, such as Crantock and Holywell Bay. There are no large developments here, just a broad sweep of sand, rolling dunes and clear Atlantic views.
If you enjoy peaceful walks with your dog, this cove should be in your plans.
Dog Access and Rules
Porth Joke is a brilliant choice if you’re visiting with a dog. Dogs are welcome all year, with no seasonal bans, so there’s usually plenty of freedom for off-lead time on the sand, especially once you’re away from the main path.
Along the approach paths and in the dunes, dogs should be kept on a lead from March to September to protect ground-nesting birds and grazing livestock. It’s a small effort that helps keep this lovely stretch of coastline wild and undisturbed.
As always, being a considerate dog owner makes all the difference. There are no bins here, so bring bags and take waste home with you.
Things To See & Do
Porth Joke rewards the effort to reach it with proper dog beach freedom, caves to explore, and that “found a secret spot” buzz. Just pack for self‑sufficiency and walking in and out.
- Low‑tide beach run: Sand goes surprisingly far for such a narrow cove – great for runs, digging and ball games with sea on one side, dunes on the other.
- Rock pools & caves: Western end reveals pools and small caves at low tide; perfect sniffing/paddling (watch slippy rocks).
- Dune scrambling: Backed by Cubert Common dunes – climb for views over Newquay Bay (on lead in bird season).
- Coastal linking: The coastal path connects to Crantock (north, 20 mins) or Holywell Bay (south) for longer dog walks.
- Swimming: The cove is sheltered at low tide, allowing dogs to paddle safely in the shallows, although be aware that there are no lifeguards.
Our tip is to visit 2 hours either side of low tide for maximum sand and cave access, avoiding the high‑tide squeeze.
Access and Facilities
This is where Porth Joke stays true to its wild character, as you have no facilities on the beach.
Parking is (10–15 min walk):
- West Pentire NT car park (larger, coastal views, pay-and-display).
- Treago Valley car park (smaller, through farm track – TR8 5QS).
Both require a hilly/uneven path down; arrive early in summer.
No toilets, cafes, lifeguards or bins, so bring water, snacks, and poop bags (take waste home). Nearest facilities: Crantock village (pub, shop, loos – 20 min walk north).
Access to the beach is sloping, unmade paths through dunes/valley, which should be fine for fit dogs and owners.
