About
Portmellon Cove is a small, sheltered cove just outside the fishing village of Mevagissey and a short drive from St Austell. Tucked into the curve of St Austell Bay, it’s a peaceful spot that often feels far quieter than some of the more popular beaches nearby.
The beach is a mix of sand and shingle, framed by gentle green hills and traditional Cornish cottages. At low tide, more sand appears, giving you a pleasant stretch for a wander along the shoreline.
Because it’s sheltered and easy to reach, Portmellon Cove is a lovely place for a relaxed coastal walk with your dog, especially if you’re also planning to explore the nearby harbour at Mevagissey.
Dog Access and Rules
Portmellon Cove has seasonal daytime restrictions, 10 am – 6 pm, from the 1st July to the 31st August.
The beach is relatively small, so it’s best to keep dogs under control when other visitors are around, particularly during warmer months when the cove can attract swimmers and paddleboarders.
Things To See & Do
This idyllic spot is known for its calm waters and scenic surroundings.
Historically, Portmellon was a quaint fishing village and a bustling hub for local fishermen. It retains much of its old-world charm today, with traditional cottages and a peaceful ambience that takes you back in time. Wander around the village of Portmellon and the surrounding areas.
At low tide, the beach becomes a pleasant place for a short seaside wander with your dog. The sheltered bay usually offers calm water, which is great for dogs who enjoy paddling or swimming.
Parking is difficult at Portmellon, so we recommend parking in Mevagissey and combining a visit to the harbour with your beach visit. You can even extend the walk further and take the South West Coast Path down to Colona Beach.
Access and Facilities
A small amount of parking is available near the beach; use the postcode PL26 6PL for your sat-nav.
Facilities include a pub and a slipway. For more facilities and parking, Mevagissey is a 20-minute walk away.
