About
Just a few miles south of Bude, Widemouth Bay Beach feels exactly like the sort of Cornish beach you hope to stumble upon. Rolling Atlantic waves and long stretches of sand that seem to go on forever.
I always think this beach feels wonderfully open. Even on a busy day, there’s room to breathe. The cliffs curve gently around the bay, and when the tide drops, the beach becomes huge. It’s the sort of location where a dog can properly stretch their legs while you wander along the shoreline with that sea breeze in your face.
Being close to Bude makes it easy to reach, but it still keeps that relaxed, slightly wild Cornish feel.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are welcome at Widemouth Bay, but there are seasonal restrictions to keep in mind. From 15th May to 30 September, dogs are not allowed on the beach between 10 am and 6 pm.
Outside those hours, and all day from October to April, dogs are free to enjoy the sand.
The good news is that Black Rock Beach, just to the south of the main bay, is dog-friendly all year round, so there’s always somewhere nearby for a seaside walk.
Early mornings and evenings in summer are especially lovely with a dog here. The beach feels peaceful, the light is soft, and the tide often leaves perfect stretches of sand for running.
Things To See & Do
- Long Beach Walks
When the tide is out, Widemouth Bay opens up into a wide sandy playground. It’s ideal for long walks, games of fetch, or simply wandering along the waterline with your dog padding happily beside you. - Explore Rock Pools
At low tide, small rock pools appear around the edges of the bay. They’re great for curious dogs (and humans) who enjoy a bit of exploring. - Clifftop Views
The coast path above the beach offers beautiful views across the Atlantic. Even a short stroll along the cliffs offers that classic Cornish scenery — rugged coastline, crashing waves, and sea views. - Surf Watching
Widemouth Bay is a popular surf spot. Sitting on the sand watching the surfers while your dog dozes beside you is one of those simple seaside pleasures that never really gets old.
Access and Facilities
Widemouth Bay is well set up for visitors, which makes it an easy beach trip with a dog. The beach is easy to reach from Bude and makes a great stop if you’re exploring the wider Cornwall coastline.
You’ll find:
- Car parks near the beach access points
- Public toilets
- Cafes and beachside eateries
- Seasonal lifeguard service
- Surf lessons and board hire
There are several nearby places where you can grab a drink or a bite to eat after a walk, many of which are relaxed about sandy paws.
