About
Monsal Dale is a beautiful stretch of the River Wye below the famous Monsal Head viaduct, offering classic Peak District scenery, riverside paths and varied walking for dogs and owners.
Monsal Dale often lives in the shadow of the Monsal Trail, with many sticking to the well-trodden trail and missing the great opportunities offered by the dale below.
Dog Access and Rules
The dale and trail are busy, shared spaces, with walkers, runners, families and many cyclists on the Monsal Trail, so dogs need solid recall and good lead manners.
The dale supports rich wildlife, including birds and a river ecosystem, so keeping to paths, preventing dogs from chasing wildlife and cleaning up after them helps protect this sensitive environment.
The River Wye is a big attraction for dogs, but currents, weirs and slippery banks make water play risky.
Things To See & Do
Popular circular routes are around 5–6 miles, with shorter out-and-back options from Monsal Head or Ashford.
Common start points include Monsal Head (pay-and-display car park with views over Monsal Dale) and Ashford-in-the-Water, where there is village parking and access to signed paths.
From Monsal Head, you can follow a stepped path down through woodland to the Monsal Trail and viaduct, then drop into the dale, which is steep in places and may not suit all dogs or owners.
The main dale path follows the River Wye, passing under the viaduct and alongside meadows, woodland and a weir; paths can be uneven, muddy and slippery after rain.
Circular routes combine riverside paths with tracks and field paths on higher ground, involving stiles and some steeper sections, so they are best for reasonably fit, confident dogs.
The nearby Monsal Trail is a wide, relatively level track on the old railway line, popular with walkers and cyclists, and can work well for buggies, dog strollers and less mobile dogs that may find the dale hard work.
Access and Facilities
At Monsal Head, you will find a car park, viewpoints, a pub and tearoom, many of which are dog-friendly or have outdoor seating where dogs are welcome. Ashford-in-the-Water offers village facilities and is a pleasant place to combine a walk with a cafe or pub stop, again with options that welcome well-behaved dogs
