About
The Monsal Trail is an 8.5-mile scenic route through the heart of the Peak District. This flat, traffic-free trail follows the former Manchester to London Midland Railway line that stretches from Bakewell to Blackwell Mill, passing through charming villages, dramatic limestone valleys, and historic railway tunnels. Highlights include the impressive Monsal Head Viaduct, which offers stunning views over the Wye Valley, and the Headstone Tunnel, one of several restored tunnels along the route.
The landscape mixes green fields, woodland, and riverside paths, making it an incredibly varied walk.
The Monsal Trail is a dream for dog walkers, with plenty of opportunities for long walks. Start your adventure at Bakewell Station, where you can wander through the town market before joining the trail.
Along the way, take in the views from Monsal Head, a popular stop with a dog-friendly cafe nearby. The Cressbrook Tunnel and Litton Tunnel provide shade and a different walking experience. Dogs seem to love the echo of their footsteps in the tunnels, making it a fun part of the walk! If you’d prefer a shorter walk, the stretch between Monsal Head and Millers Dale is one of the most picturesque sections.
Nearby villages like Great Longstone and Tideswell have dog-friendly pubs where you can relax after your walk.
Dog Access and Rules
The Monsal Trail is mostly off-lead friendly, and the long, straight sightlines make it easy to keep an eye on your dog. The whole route is built on a former railway line, so it’s flat, accessible, and forgiving underfoot. That makes it a lovely choice for dogs of all ages.
The main times to clip the lead back on are:
- Inside tunnels
- At busy access points
- When passing cyclists or horses
- On any detours into the open dales where livestock may be grazing
Access and Facilities
The Monsal Trail is easily accessible from several points, including the old stations at Bakewell (DE45 1GE), Hassop (DE45 1NW) and Millers Dale.
The nearest train stations are Buxton and Matlock, with bus services connecting Bakewell and surrounding villages.
