About
Hatchet Pond looks calm from a distance, whilst up close, it quietly asks you to pay attention.
This is a more open, lowland New Forest walk, shaped by weather, seasons, and the presence of livestock. It’s not difficult, but it does ask more of you as an owner. Choosing the right day, keeping your dog close, and reading the space all matter here.
New Forest’s largest body of fresh water and home to some of the rarest wetland plants and freshwater animals, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area for Conservation.
The open space and water create a sense of calm that’s very different from woodland walking. There’s room to breathe here, and the pace naturally slows as you take in what’s around you.
It’s not a walk to rush or force. It’s one to approach with intention.
Dog Access and Rules
Livestock often graze close to the path, and birds gather near the water, especially in warmer months.
This is a walk where lead use really matters, and dogs must be kept out of the water.
Things To See & Do
The path around Hatchet Pond is clear and easy to follow, looping gently around the water’s edge. Underfoot, you will find a mix of gravel and grass, which feels fine in dry weather but can get muddy after rain. There are a few spots where it can be boggy even in good weather, so good footwear is a definite recommendation.
The openness is the defining feature, with little shelter available, and the landscape is more exposed than in the New Forest’s wooded areas. On windy days, it can feel surprisingly harsh.
The pond itself draws both people and animals, so the walk feels shared in a very real way.
It’s less forgiving than woodland, but more expansive.
Access and Facilities
Facilities are very limited, with just the car park, and if you are lucky, an ice cream van.
