About
Buckler’s Hard is a historic, riverside village on the Beaulieu River where you can combine gentle dog walks with heritage, scenery and waterside time in one compact area. Dogs on leads are welcome around the village and even on the Beaulieu River cruise, which makes it a genuinely dog-inclusive New Forest day out.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs are now welcome in the village, as long as they are kept on a lead at all times and their owners clean up after them. They are also welcome in the Museum and Captain’s Table Tea Rooms as long as they are kept on a lead at all times. Dogs are allowed on the River Cruise, but must be kept on a lead. Whilst dogs are not permitted in the cottage displays (except for guide dogs).
Things To See & Do
In practice, a dog day here involves parking at Beaulieu or Buckler’s Hard, walking the 2-mile riverside path between them, exploring the historic village with your dog on lead, taking a river cruise in season, then refuelling at the cafe or pub before heading back.
At Buckler’s Hard, wander down the street between 18th and 19th‑century cottages to the river. Even if you skip indoor exhibits, you can still soak up the shipbuilding story from interpretation boards, views of the river and the preserved layout of the old village streets. The sense of place is strong just walking the site and imagining the ships built here for Nelson’s Navy.
Between Easter and October, 30‑minute river cruises run on the Beaulieu River; dogs on leads are welcome on board, so they can sit with you while you enjoy wildlife views and commentary on the area’s past. It is a relaxed way to break up a walk, especially if you want a sit‑down with scenery.
Beaulieu itself has riverside greens, tearooms and pubs, plus the famous National Motor Museum and Palace House.
