About
The Quiraing is on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish Ridge on the Isle of Skye. It is a hollow surrounded by a high rock rampart, known for breathtaking views, attracting hikers and is one of Skye’s most iconic landscapes.
Dog Access and Rules
The Quiraing is a wide-open space with no formal restrictions on dogs. However, because it’s an area used for sheep grazing, keeping your dog on a lead is essential to avoid disturbing livestock. The uneven terrain and sheer drops also make it wise to keep your dog close at hand for their safety.
Things To See & Do
When you visit the Quiraing, you’ll see towering rock formations, rolling hills, and sweeping views stretching over Staffin Bay, the sea, and surrounding islands. Some highlights include The Needle, a tall, jagged pinnacle of rock that rises sharply from the landscape; The Table, a flat plateau about the size of a football pitch surrounded by cliffs; and The Prison, a steep rock formation that resembles a medieval fortress from afar.
Beyond the rock formations, you’ll enjoy stunning views over the coast and the Sound of Raasay, with visibility stretching to the Scottish mainland on clear days. The landscape is constantly shifting in appearance as clouds and light move across the area, providing an ideal location for photographers.
The Quiraing is a popular spot for hikers and photographers alike due to its sense of wilderness and isolation. The rugged terrain provides a true escape into nature.
You will need to give yourself 3+ hours for the 6.5km (4 mile) circular walk, which can be challenging in places with rocky paths and steep climbs, but it’s well worth it.
Access and Facilities
The Quiraing is about a 40-minute drive from Portree. The easiest way to reach it is by car, as public transport options are limited. There’s a car park at the start of the Quiraing walk. From the car park, well-marked paths lead into the heart of the landscape.
Facilities are nonexistent once you start, so make sure you come prepared.
