Dog Access and Rules
Claigan Coral Beach is dog-friendly, with no seasonal restrictions. Dogs are welcome to explore the beach and surrounding areas as long as they are well-behaved and kept under control, especially near wildlife or livestock.
Things To See & Do
Claigan Coral Beach is located in the northwest of the Isle of Skye, near the village of Dunvegan. Despite its name, the beach isn’t made of actual coral but crushed white coral like seaweed called maerl, that creates the illusion of white coral sand. The beach overlooks the picturesque Loch Dunvegan, offering stunning views of the nearby islands. Historically, this area has been home to the MacLeod clan, and Dunvegan Castle, the clan’s ancestral seat, is just a short drive away.
Claigan Coral Beach is a haven for dogs who love to run, explore, and splash around. The soft, white sands and shallow waters make for the perfect environment for a stroll with your dog.
Trails lead from the beach into the surrounding hills, allowing one to explore more of Skye’s breathtaking landscapes. While exploring, watch for seals basking on nearby rocks or dolphins swimming in the distance.
Access and Facilities
Accessing Claigan Coral Beach is part of the adventure. From the village of Dunvegan, it’s just a 10-minute drive along narrow country roads. There is a small car park near the trailhead, and from there, it’s a scenic 30-minute walk to the beach. The path is well-marked but uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The walk is manageable for most dogs, but be sure to bring water for your dog, especially on warm days.
Claigan Coral Beach is remote and unspoilt, so you have no facilities. There are no toilets, cafes, or shops at the beach, so you’ll need to come prepared with food, water, and any essentials for your dog. However, the nearby village of Dunvegan has facilities and Dunvegan Castle, which is well worth a visit.
