About
The beach at Hythe is a great dog-friendly location away from the main Kent tourist destinations. Although seasonal restrictions exist, it makes a great all-year-round dog visit, as the beach always has areas available and a great promenade.
Dog Access and Rules
From May 1st to September 30th, dogs are prohibited from the main beach between Twiss Road and St Leonards Road.
Things To See & Do
The beach is a large pebble beach backed by a concrete promenade, split into four stretches of beach from east to west:
- Battery Point Beach is in West Hythe, where the Royal Military Canal reaches the sea.
- The Main Beach stretches from Twiss Road along West Parade until you reach Fisherman’s Beach.
- Fisherman’s Beach is a working beach where the boats are kept on the beach, and you have a fishmongers cafe that sells local catch of the day. The fisherman were granted the right to maintain boats on the beach in the 15th century, a right confirmed by Elizabeth 1st when creating the Cinque Ports in return for providing crews that fought in the battle against the Spanish Armada.
- Foreshore Beach is closed when the MOD Hythe firing range is active. When the range is unused, the public may walk the foreshore path from Fisherman’s Beach to the Redoubt fortress at East Dymchurch.
The beach has steps and some ramps from the promenade, and although the pebble area at the top is wide, there is a steep slope down to the water and/or low-tide part of the beach.
Access and Facilities
The beach is backed by a road which has parking on one side, or you have a few small car parks with Hythe itself. A few options to eat near the beach.
