About
Cayton Bay beach is an unspoilt and quiet bay located 5km (3 miles) south of Scarborough and a similar distance north of Filey. The beach at Cayton Bay is an excellent dog‑friendly escape from central Scarborough’s summer beach restrictions.
The bay is a wide, sandy beach backed by cliffs, and one of the best surfing locations in North Yorkshire. The bay is quieter and less built‑up, which suits dogs who find the promenades, donkeys and amusement noise in town overwhelming. With good surf and space to spread out, it also works well for families where some want to play in the waves while others take steady walks with the dog.
If you don’t want to sit still, then why not explore the remains of WWII fortifications or search for some fossils? Some of the cliffs and rocks were formed in the upper Jurassic period; just be careful of rockfalls.
Dog Access and Rules
While Scarborough’s North and South Bays have seasonal dog‑ban zones from May to the end of September, Cayton Bay remains dog‑friendly along its whole length, so you are not trying to squeeze into small dog sections that vanish at high tide.
Access and Facilities
Cayton Bay has just enough facilities whilst remaining rural.
There is a main pay‑and‑display car park on Killerby Cliff close to the main beach paths. If you arrive early, there is also limited roadside parking along the cliff‑top, which gives direct access to the paths down.
All paths to the beach involve steep sections and/or flights of steps, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs and can be hard work with buggies or for anyone with lots of kit.
A small beach cafe/kiosk at the top of the main access offers hot drinks, breakfast sandwiches, ice cream and cakes. Public toilets are available near the parking/holiday park area rather than directly on the sand, so it is worth planning loo stops before you head down.
The nearby holiday park and village offer additional options, including pubs and shops.
