About
Filey is a historic Victorian fishing and Edwardian seaside resort – a traditional seaside town with a charming character. It has a range of local shops, cafes, and amenities but still has the feel of a small coastal community.
Filey is a great destination to use as a base to tour the North Yorkshire coast. At Filey, you have a five-mile stretch of beautiful sandy beach. The beach is divided and typically listed as separate beaches, and we list them from North to South.
- Filey Sands
- Muston Sands
- Hunmanby Sands
- Reighton Sands
- Speeton Sands.
The main town beach is Filey Sands, which is backed by a promenade and has all the town’s facilities close at hand. You have Filey Brigg, a narrow peninsula at the northern end of the beach, which provides a scenic walk with views of the cliffs and offers opportunities for rock pooling.
At the beach’s southern end, you pass out of North Yorkshire into the East Riding of Yorkshire when you meet the cliffs around Flamborough Head, making Filey a good destination and alternative to the busier Bridlington for exploring the cliffs and nature reserves.
There are summer (1 May – 30 September) dog restrictions on a small section where dogs are banned between the Royal Parade and Cobble Landing. Other parts of the beach are dog-friendly at any time of year, making this beach and the surrounding coastline a greater all-year-round dog destination.
Facilities are good at the northern end with all the facilities of Filey close at hand, but as you move southwards you have limited facilities but then also fewer people.
