About
Picton Castle and Gardens is one of those places that feels like a bit of a hidden gem. Tucked away in Pembrokeshire, and unlike many heritage sites, it’s pretty decent for dog owners. The main castle is off-limits for dogs, but the 50 acres of gardens are a different story.
Dog Access and Rules
Dogs on leads are welcome throughout the gardens and woodland walks, but they’re not allowed inside the castle. There’s no dedicated dog area or anything like that, but there’s plenty of space to roam, although you must always keep your dog on a lead.
Dogs are allowed in the restaurant’s lower seating area and the outdoor areas. Water bowls are also available in the courtyard.
Things To See & Do
The gardens are the real highlight here, and they’re surprisingly varied. One minute, you’re wandering through a proper formal garden, all neatly trimmed, and the next, you’re in the middle of a woodland trail that feels like it goes on forever.
The woodland walks are perfect if your dog’s the sort that likes a bit of adventure. Some bits are flat and easy-going, others have a few steep bits, but nothing too bad.
Access and Facilities
Getting to Picton Castle is straightforward enough. If you’re driving, it’s just off the A40, not far from Haverfordwest, with plenty of parking on site. Public transport is a bit trickier – no train station nearby, and buses aren’t the most regular, so driving’s your best bet.
Facilities-wise, there’s a restaurant on-site, and you can sit in the dog-friendly area inside or outside with your dog. The toilets are near the entrance, and a few benches are dotted around if you want to sit and take it all in.
